A question I am often asked is “How can I travel more sustainably?” Tourism is complex involving many actors and suppliers from the initial booking through to the delievery of your wonderful holiday experience – so the answer to this question depends very much on the sort of holiday you are planning. As the tourism industry necessarily re-emerges from Covid as a more sustainable version of its former self – there is much that destinations, suppliers and operators need, can, and (many) are doing and we will publish more on this! For now – as a traveller – there is also much to be done. Here are three steps to get started – to embrace the sustainable traveller within you:
- Make sure the travel organisations/agent/operator you enage is a member of GSTC
- Be a selective detective! Explore your travel operator/agent – ask where the money is going! Who is benefitting? Eco-labels can be hard to verify. So check out their social media – Do the Research.
- If your holiday involves a flight or a cruise – be aware of the carbon impact. Carbonfootprint.com has a little calculator and some great ideas for off-setting, and useful information on sustainable flying.
There are plenty more ideas and actions and we will be publishing more on this.
